Lighting design in "Ships in a Strip" at the MS Maritime Museum

Exhibition architect Anne Schnettler challenged the conventions with her innovative approach to museum exhibitions. Her creation, "Ships in a Strip," at the MS Maritime Museum was nothing short of impressive. This permanent exhibition features a 40-metre-long and 4.5-metre-high display case that winds through the room, allowing visitors to enter and exit through it. Our task was clear: to create the perfect light for this spectacular exhibition.

Client:
M/S Maritime Museum
Assignment:
Lighting of the exhibition in collaboration with Exhibition Architect Anne Schnettler
Solution:
Ljusdesign - PICO track system

One of the first challenges we faced was to illuminate objects in the display case that were hung both high and low, while avoiding dazzling the audience. We decided to use the PICO track rail that allowed us to adjust the light precisely as needed and reach even the most remote objects.

The shadows from the ships in the display case were another challenge, but we also saw the potential in using them to optimize the story. By using asymmetrical optics, we were able to hit the objects precisely and create exciting shadow plays that gave life to the exhibition.

The extraordinary ceiling height and high display cases allowed us to experiment with long shooting angles, which requires precision to avoid the spotlights disturbing the audience. On the other hand, this challenge creates a visually impressive play of shadows, as the light travels down through the display case, highlighting the contours of the different ships.

"Ships in a Strip" contains an impressive collection of model ships in every conceivable shape, from simple cardboard and cardboard models to highly detailed and professionally built ship creations. Each item requires its own unique lighting solution to highlight its distinctive features and history.

A worthwhile and environmentally friendly decision by the MS Maritime Museum was to recycle the surplus from their existing light package. This gave us an exciting challenge to combine new and old lighting equipment, while contributing to reducing waste and protecting the environment.

Our skilled lighting designer, Henrik Vierø, fully understood the museum's needs and vision. In close cooperation, a fantastic story was created in "Ships on a Stripe." We stayed by MS Maritime Museum side all the way, and together we achieved our goal. The result is an exhibition that is absolutely worth seeing and manages to take visitors on a unique journey through maritime history
